1-acre parcel in Low Moor VA with robust spring

The Alleghany Highlands has more underdeveloped springs and water sources than many other sections of the state.  The robust spring on this Karnes Creek 1-acre parcel in Low Moor VA runs cold and clear and at one time served as a source of water for the local community.  The spring (actually 3 springs) forms a pool approximately 30 feet wide by 100 feet long which overflows as a perennial stream to join Karnes Creek.  An abandoned brick pump house is located on the eastern side of the spring pond.

“….nor can any locality excel Alleghany County in the excellence of bountiful water power which only awaits the command of genius and capital to utilize it to commercial advantage.”
— Text from Alleghany County Virginia, Exposition Number, 1907

Springs have been used for a variety of human needs including drinking water, domestic water supply, irrigation, mills, navigation, and electricity generation. Other uses include recreational activities such as fishing, swimming, and floating; therapy; water for livestock; fish hatcheries; geothermal applications; process and cooling water; and supply for brewing, distillation and bottled mineral water.

….”Nearly always the streams of Alleghany County are rapid. Except for the influence of industrial operations, they are as generally clear. Springs, sometimes of freestone water and sometimes of limestone, are numerous. But in the limestone belts, much of the rainfall sinks into underground channels, reappearing in powerful springs at the base level of the valleys. A spring at Low Moor is said to have a flow of 500 gallons a minute.
